Faculty, staff and retirees are cornerstones of the University community, and your University benefits and retirement are foundational in supporting your health, financial future and overall well-being. Taking time to understand the programs available to you can help make choices that match your goals and stage of life. Explore options that work together to create a strong total rewards package for you and your family with HR support to help navigate your benefits with confidence.
Insurance
Insurance coverage supports your health and protects your finances when life changes or unexpected events happen. Medical, dental, vision, life and disability plans offer different levels of support so you can choose coverage that fits your needs. Clear plan details, cost information and helpful tools make it easier to understand how each option works.
Retirement
Retirement programs provide ways to save for the future through employer-sponsored plans and personal contributions. These options help you build long-term financial security and give you control over how you plan for life after your career. Information about investment choices, contribution rates and plan types can guide you as you set your goals.
Savings & Payment Accounts
Tax-favored accounts offer ways to manage everyday expenses and complement other benefits. Options like health savings accounts, flexible spending accounts and dependent care accounts can reduce out-of-pocket costs for expected needs. Each account has specific rules for enrollment, contributions and spending so you can make the most of available savings.
Tuition Assistance
Tuition assistance supports continued education for employees, retirees and eligible family members. Assistance can reduce tuition costs for credit or audit courses at UM System universities, with different levels of support based on your relationship to the University. These programs offer a flexible way to build skills, pursue new goals and continue learning.
Employee Assistance Program
The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offers emotional wellbeing solutions for employees (faculty and staff) and their household members, including premium access to Calm and Calm Health apps, as well as tools, resources and counseling services to support emotional wellness.
Benefit Eligibility & Program Structure
Eligibility rules and funding guidelines shape how benefits work for employees and their families. Knowing who can enroll, when coverage begins and how payments are shared helps you plan ahead. Key guidelines apply across most programs, while some benefits have unique requirements based on employment type or life changes.
Enrolling & Changing Benefits
Enrolling & Changing Benefits
First Time Enrollment
When you first become benefit-eligible, you¡¯ll make your first enrollment choices for insurance coverage, retirement and other programs. This is your starting point for researching and building a package that fits your life, goals and family needs.
Annual Enrollment
The two-week annual enrollment period each fall gives you a chance to review and adjust your benefits for the following calendar year. Just like it is important to get your health checked annually, the same annual ¡°benefit check-up¡± is important to help you make choices that support you and your family year-to-year.
Life Events & Coverage Changes
Major moments like marriage, birth, adoption or a loss of other coverage can shift your benefit needs. When these events happen, you may have the opportunity to update your coverage so it stays aligned with the changes in your life.
